Chasing Spanish Ship Elcano | JustMom

On March 20, Saturday morning, the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano arrived at Cebu port to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the world’s first circumnavigation. The commemoration was attended only by officials of the Cebu-Mandaue-Lapu-Lapu City government, heads of government agencies, and the Spanish embassy because of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

To refresh our memory of Philippine History, only the Victoria ship led by Juan Sebastian Elcano went back to Spain. The Armada de Molucca under the command of Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Spain in 1520 with 5 ships at the start – the Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepcion, Santiago, and Victoria. Accordingly, Magellan was slain in the Mactan Island battle by chieftain Lapu-Lapu. That's why Elcano led the ship to go back home.

On Sunday, my family and I had this quick city adventure: finding the Spanish Ship Elcano. You might be wondering, where is the Elcano Ship by now? We also had this question that lingers for quite some time. We went to IL CORSO to look for the ship, entered many gates at the port area but no luck seeing it. Finally, we had known that the Elcano Ship was safe and sound at Cebu International Port.
