Discovering the Timeless Charm of Ephesus Archaeological Site and the Ephesus Experience Museum
After our sons wrapped up an intense robotics competition, we decided to make the most of our spare time before the grand finale. With just a few hours in between events, we sneaked away for an unforgettable visit to one of the world’s most remarkable heritage sites — the ancient city of Ephesus and the Ephesus Experience Museum.

The journey itself was part of the adventure. We hired a private transport from Fuar Izmir’s tourist service (A Plus Catering & Organizasyon), costing us around 250 Euro. The ride was swift — far quicker than what we’re used to back in the Philippines. Glancing at the speedometer, I noticed the driver cruising between 150 to 200 km/hr on the highway. It felt like a dash into history itself.
First Impressions: Souvenirs, Cats, and the Entrance
We reached the Ephesus Archaeological Site a little after three in the afternoon. Before even stepping inside the ruins, we were greeted by rows of local shops offering souvenirs ranging from miniature statues to silk scarves. The atmosphere had a rustic charm, and adding to the warmth were dozens of cats lounging around. These weren’t Persian cats as they first appeared to me, but rather Turkish Angoras and European Shorthairs — elegant felines often found wandering freely in this historic region. Their graceful presence somehow blended seamlessly with the timeless stones of Ephesus.
At the entrance, we purchased four tickets at 40 Euro each, which gave us access not only to the ruins but also to the much-talked-about Ephesus Experience Museum.
Walking Through History
As we strolled deeper into the site, various signages guided us through the ruins. Each one explained the significance of the structures — from the once-grand marketplace where merchants traded goods, to the ancient baths that reflected the Roman dedication to community life, and the theater that once hosted up to 25,000 spectators. The carved stones and weathered columns carried centuries of stories, each corner whispering reminders of the grandeur that once was.

The Ephesus Experience Museum
What truly amazed us was stepping inside the Ephesus Experience Museum. This was our very first time trying a 3D immersive museum, and it completely redefined how history is told. The presentation brought to life the world of the ancient Greeks and Romans in breathtaking detail. We watched stories unfold — from the legends surrounding Alexander the Great’s early connections to this land, to the rise and fall of the city through wars, trade, and cultural shifts.
For about half an hour, it felt as though we had been transported back in time. The visuals, soundscapes, and lifelike reenactments made us feel part of the ancient narrative. By the end of the show, we were left in awe, talking among ourselves about how impressive it was compared to traditional museums.
Souvenir Shopping
No visit is complete without bringing a piece of history home. After the museum, we browsed through the souvenir shop and found a mix of traditional and unique items. We picked up Artemis figurines, a quirky iron metal soldier pencil cap, ref magnets, and keychains. I personally couldn’t resist buying a Mama Mary figurine and a finely woven silk carpet from Ephesus — treasures that carry both spiritual and cultural value.
To our delight, we even met a friendly cat in the area that looked strikingly like our own cat, Zimba, waiting back home. It was such a sweet reminder of family even while traveling so far away.

A Tour We’ll Never Forget
Interestingly, the robotics event organizers had actually arranged a group tour for the participants to visit Ephesus after the competition finale the following day. However, since our flight schedule was set for the same time, our sons’ team opted to join the alternative tour to Space Camp Turkey instead. Looking back, I’m glad we carved out time on our own to experience Ephesus.
The ruins, the museum, the cats, and even the thrill of the ride there — everything came together to make this detour one of the most memorable highlights of our trip.
